What is Body Composition?
Body Composition is a program to calculate your body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage. BMI is calculated using the following formula:
BMI U.S. = weight / (height * height) * 703
BMI Metric = weight / ((height/100) * (height/100))
BMI ranges as defined by the Centers for Disease Control:
Under 18.5 = Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 = Normal weight
25 - 29.9 = Overweight
30 and greater = Obesity
The body fat calculation used is one developed by the U.S. Navy. The formula is as follows:
*body fat % males = 86.010 * log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 * log10(height) + 36.76
*body fat % females = 163.205 * log10(waist + hips - neck) - 97.684 * log10(height) - 78.387
Body fat ranges as categorized by the American Council on Exercise:
MEN:
2 - 5% = Essential fat
6 - 13% = Athletes
14 - 17% = Fitness
18 - 25% = Acceptable
25% and greater = Obese
WOMEN:
12 - 15% = Essential fat
16 - 20% = Athletes
21 - 24% = Fitness
25 - 31% = Acceptable
32% and greater = Obese
System Requirements
An iPhone or iPod Touch OS v2.0
Usage
Usage is simple. Just take your measurements, weigh yourself and input the values. If you don't want to calculate both BMI and body fat %, you can just fill in the values required to calculate either. For BMI to be calculated, you must fill in height and weight. For body fat calculations, sex, height, neck, waist, and hips for women, are the required fields.
To help improve the accuracy of the calculations you can do two things. First, take all measurements to within 0.25 inches or 0.5 centimeters. Second, it's best to take each measurement three times and then use the average.
